Harper shoved the pitchfork into the muck on Bostonâs stall floor and hefted it into the waiting wheelbarrow. The horse watched her over a half-wall from the next stall, a gentle look in his eyes. âYouâre just a big sweetie, arenât you?â she asked as she paused her work and reached over to pet his nose.
âYouâre doing a great job,â Jesse said from the walkway in the center of the barn. âItâs important for their health to keep their stalls clean.â
Maddie came running out of the stall sheâd been assigned to, gagging and clutching her throat. âI donât think itâs good for my freaking health!â she complained. âI donât think I can do this.â
Leah poked her head out of Gypsyâs stall. âItâs just a little horse poo. Think of it as recycled hay.â
Maddie glared at her as she braced herself against the gate. âI donât think so. Everyone always portrays horses as being so romantic. I think theyâre all nuts.â
âThey are kind of romantic,â Harper countered. âYou have to get out and take care of them, but they give a lot back. Itâs not like just getting behind the wheel of a mindless car. Your horse actually knows what heâs doing on the trail.â She didnât mind the work, anyway. This whole trip had been about rolling up her sleeves and doing something physical, and it was having a remarkable effect on her mind and body. Even as upset as sheâd been with Elliot and then with Austin, she could tell there was an inner balance that was starting to occur.
âHarperâs right,â Jesse agreed. âIâve had a horse save my life more than once.â
âOh, tell us!â Leah stepped all the way out into the walkway, leaning on her pitchfork.
Jesse grinned and gave her a wink. âYou donât really want to hear it.â
âBut I do!â
Harper had noticed that Jesse seemed to be the sort of guy who wanted to find a woman to flirt with, no matter the situation. She didnât know how far heâd carry it, but she promised herself sheâd keep an eye on Leah.
âAll right. I was worked for a horse breeder when I was younger. He didnât believe in keeping the horses in stalls unless they were sick or about to give birth, so I spent a lot of time out in an open field, surrounded by all these half-tamed horses. They had an open shelter they could go into to get out of the weather, and I was in there fixing a few things. The horses inside started to stampede. I couldnât get out of the way fast enough.â Jesse spoke quickly as the tension built in the story, crafting it to make it as suspenseful as possible. âI felt this huge pressure in the middle of my back, and the next thing I knew, I was flying through the air. I landed flat on my face, but all the horses went racing by without trampling me. It was all because one of the mares had put her nose to my back and shoved me out of the way.
